1 - SUDAN

After fighting broke out in April 2023 between the leaders of the Sudanese Amed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over control of the state, over 8.2 million people have been displaced, and over 15,000 killed.

Famine has now been officially declared in the Darfur region, where the provincial capital has been under siege for months and the intense conflict in the region has destroyed food, water, and healthcare resources for the surrounding villages.

2 - TURKEY

After the ceasefire between the PKK (the Kurdistan Workers’ Party) and the Turkish government broke down in 2015, fighting has escalated, with more than 7,000 people killed in the conflict so far.

  • The PKK was founded in the 1970s. Its current goal is to secure equal rights for Kurdish people in Turkey.

  • PKK is a US-designated terrorist organization.

  • The Kurdish YPG (People’s Defense Units) still receive support from US forces in Syria. The US denounces PKK terrorist activity.

  • Turkey considers the YPG a terrorist organization.

3 - INDONESIA

The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), a militant group resisting Indonesian development, ambushed an aircraft after it landed in the remote village of Alama in Central Papua. The pilot, a 50-year-old New Zealander named Glen Malcolm Conning, was shot to death; the passengers were released.
