1 - ISRAEL

1 thing to know

Israel launched a major raid in the West Bank city of Jenin.

The context

On January 21, 2025, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) began a large-scale counterterrorism operation called "Operation Iron Wall" in Jenin. The operation involves drone strikes, special forces, and large numbers of ground troops entering the city.

Israeli officials said goals were neutralizing terror infrastructure and eliminating imminent threats. This operation follows recent violence, including a roadside bomb attack that killed an Israeli reservist soldier the day before. The military suggests the operation could last several days and is part of broader efforts to prevent Hamas from establishing a significant foothold in the West Bank.

More from the region

  • The next Israel-Hamas hostage exchange and prisoner release is scheduled for Saturday, as part of the ceasefire deal.

  • Approximately 57 hostages are believed to remain in Hamas custody in Gaza

TECH SPOTLIGHT: M777 HOWITZER

Source: Military.com

Developed in 1987, the M77 is a 155 mm howitzer. Weighing just 4.2 tons, it's 41% lighter than its predecessor, thanks to its extensive use of titanium. This means it can be easily transported by helicopters, transport aircraft, and even towed by medium tactical vehicles. It has a digital fire control system and can hit targets more than 20 miles away.

What it’s used for

The M777 serves in multiple armies including those of the United States, Canada, Australia, and Ukraine. It's been battle-tested in challenging environments like Afghanistan and Iraq, providing critical fire support for military operations.

2 - CONGO

1 thing to know

The Congolese military group M23 seized the town of Minova in Eastern Congo.

The context

M23 militants have overtaken several towns in Congo in recent weeks, and on Tuesday, advanced into and captured Minova, strategic supply route to Goma, the provincial capital. Thousands of people have evacuated the towns ahead of M23, who have also captured Lumbishi, Numbi, and Shanje.

The town of Masisi was also captured, and the Congolese army launched a counterattack in an attempt to retake it. Despite a previous lull, fighting with M23 has again drastically increased in recent months.

More from the region

  • According to the UN, over 170,000 people have been displaced by M23’s advances in the last 2 weeks

  • In December 2024, the Congolese army accused M23 of killing 12 civilians in the Lubero territory, which M23 denied

  • M23 is backed by Rwanda, and although denied by both sides, has been confirmed by the presence of the Rwandan arms in the hands of M23
