TECH SPOTLIGHT: M60 AVLB
Source: Wikipedia
The M60 AVLB (Armored Vehicle-Launched Bridge) is a vehicle that carries and deploys its own bridge. Developed by the U.S. Army in the 1960s, it’s essentially an M60 Patton tank, but instead of a gun turret, it has a massive 60-foot foldable bridge on top. The vehicle can unfold and place a bridge wherever it's needed in just 10 minutes.
The vehicle is operated by a two-person crew and can travel at speeds up to 30 mph. The bridge itself is made of aluminum and is strong enough to support up to 85 tons of other tanks and heavy military vehicles crossing over it.
After other vehicles cross the bridge, it can drive over, pick up its bridge from the other side, and continue on with the rest of the forces.
What it’s used for
The AVLB has seen action in numerous conflicts, from Vietnam to Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It's been used extensively by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, as well as several other countries including Israel (where they call it the "Tagash"), Spain, and Singapore.
2 - HAITI
1 thing to know
US Embassy and UN vehicles were targeted in attacks by Haitian gangs.
The context
Gang violence has continued to worsen in Port-Au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, with recent attacks targeting US Embassy vehicles, and a UN helicopter. The helicopter, carrying 18 people, had taken off from Port-Au-Prince, before gangs opened fire on it and forcing it to land. No one was injured in the incident. Two US vehicles were also fired upon, and according to reports, were intentionally targeted. These attacks have prompted the evacuation of non-emergency workers from the US Embassy.
More from the region
The violence has affected more than just the capital, the surrounding regions are also facing mass evacuations as gangs have also attacked the nearby areas. In the coastal town of Arcahaie, 50 suspected gang members were killed after they attacked, mostly by police, but some also drowned after their boat capsized. During the attack, gang member burned homes and cars, before they ran out of ammunition and took shelter in nearby areas, where they we're hunted out by the police.
